CWM Adds to its 3 NADCA '09 Die Cast Winners
with 2009 IMA Mg Processing Technology Award

Unique Mag In-Die De-gating, 2-Stage Ejection Production
Eliminated Part Trimming Plus Cut Die Costs 20%

Capping its unprecedented triple win in the Annual Die Casting Competition of the North American Die Casting Assn., Chicago White Metal Casting, its customer, Gentex Corp., and the diemaker Cast Products have now been named winners of the 2009 Magnesium Processing Technology Award of the International Magnesium Assn.

The awarded Mg die casting (shown above with its finished housing) was a support component for an advanced self-dimming automotive rearview mirror from Gentex. It is being produced with all post-casting part trimming operations eliminated, a first for CWM's high-pressure, hot-chamber mag die casting process.

Using in-die de-gating, two-stage ejection technology, borrowed from miniature zinc die cast tooling, resulted in lower piece-part costs plus elimination of trim die design and construction. The side-stepping of the complicated two-cavity trim die that would have been required yielded a 20% savings in overall tooling costs.

The magnesium die cast support provides lightweight, with strength, rigidity and dimensional accuracy. Its ball end is held to a tolerance of +/- 0.1 mm over long production runs. This unique die casting is being featured in an upcoming of Design News and the October 8 issue of Machine Design.
